Vietnam War With Comparisons - 1774 Words
Vietnam War ââ¬â With comparisons to Korea. The Vietnam War started on the 1st November 1955, however full U.S military involvement was not until over ten years later in 1965 following the Gulf of Tonkin incident in which a U.S Destroyer was reportedly fired upon by North Vietnamese forces. Once again, as with the Korean War five years previous, the North part of the country was the Communists and the South part was the Capitalists. The Vietnam War was a lot more forthcoming than the Korean War, given the ten year period in which military advisers resided in Vietnam before the outbreak. Despite this build up the interest in Vietnam by war correspondents was at a minimal level. It is reported that even in 1963, just two years prior to the full involvement of the U.S military, there were only enough full-time correspondents to fill a table at a restaurant . The lack of media personnel in the country until 1965 shows that despite the indications shown in Korea for the USA to protect their interests, there is not much pull unless there is a full military involvement. The number of correspondents around in Vietnam before 1965 was at a measly eight. However, signifying the size of the war, the peak number in March 1968 hit 645 correspondents in Vietnam . Amongst this number saw a large quantity of female correspondents make their way to Vietnam. In all 467 women were accredited to being correspondents during the war, the most ever in any war . Herman Ebbinghaus Essay Example For Students
Herman Ebbinghaus Essay During the late 1800s a new science was emerging in Europe. Psychologys rootscan be traced back to Germany and a man by the name of William Wunt. FollowingWunt other psychologists began emerging in different fields. Of these pioneersHerman Ebbinghaus was one, and his field of study was memory. He performed thefirst experiments in 1885 in Germany and the following is a background on theman and his field. Herman Ebbinghaus was born in 1850 in Germany and died therein 1909. He received his formal education at the Universities of Bonn, Halle, and Berlin (Gale, 1996). Ebbinghaus received degrees in philosophy and historyfrom these universities (Gale, 1996). Ebbinghaus went on to teach at theUniversities of Berlin, Poland, Breslaw and Halle (Gale, 1996). Theseexperiences combined with later experiences with memory combine to giveEbbinghaus a curiosity about memory greater than most of his time. Memory can bedefined as your amount of learning or your stored information. The process ofstoring and retreving information from the brain that is central to learning andthinking (Microsoft Encarta, , 1997). According to Myers (1998) memory isany indication that learning has persisted over time. There are alsofour types of memory classified: recollection, recall, recognition, andrelearning. Recollection is the reconstruction of facts based on clues thatserve as reminders; recall is the active remembering of something from the pastwithout help; recognition is the ability to identify previous stimuli asfamiliar; relearning is material that seems to be easier to remember than othersas if it has been learned before (MSE, 1997). These four types of memorytogether help all people to remember anything from the states capitals to yourbest friends birthday party from second grade. Some researchers say that thereare specific sites dedicated to memory while others say that all the brain workstogether (MSE, 1997). There are tests to determine memory in individuals thatEbbinghaus Ebbinghaus 3 himself developed and will be discussed later. One testthat does involve memory in a way would be the IQ test developed to testchildrens level of intelligence which in turn depends on how much the childremembers. Ebbinghaus served in the Franco-Prussian War then seven years afterthat, decided to tutor in England, France and Berlin (Gale, 1996). It was duringthis time that Ebbinghaus became interested in memory and began to wonder howmemory worked (Gale, 1996). In the journal of Physiological Psychology WilliamWunt said that a test on memory could not be performed (Gale, 1996). Afterreading this Ebbinghaus decided that he would try and test memory himself. Armedwith his curiosity and his knowledge of memory from tutoring Ebbinghaus beganthe tests. He used the same mathematical treatment that Gustav Fechner used inElements of Psychophysics to try and test memory experimentally (Gale, 1996). Ebbinghaus decided to be the subject and the experimenter in this test so hemade a list of nonsense syllables that he would memorize (Myers, 1998). Hecrated 2,300 one syllable consonant-vowel-consonant combinations to make hisstudy easier (Gale, 1996). He made words such as taz, bok, lef so that he couldtest the memorization rather than his previous knowledge of the words. Hedivided the material into lists that he memorized in different conditions (Gale,1996). He measured them at night, in the day, when he was tired, just gotten up,etc. He recorded the average time it took him to memorize the lists perfectlythen altared the test (Gale 1996). According to Gale (1996) he made observationsabout ther effects of such variables as speed, list length, and number ofrepetitions. Ebbinghaus also wanted to test long term and short term memoryretention. He compared the time it took him to memorize any list once with theammount of time it took him to memorize the same list again (Gale, 1996). Hea lso measured immediate Ebbinghaus 4 memory showing that he remembered about sixto eight items off his list after one look (Gale, 1996). Ebbinghaus in testingmemory wanted to know how much he still knew from his lists later. According toMyers (1998) he would test himself on the same material thirty minutes to thirtydays after his initial test. Using the mathematical methods mentioned earlier hecame up with a retention curve showing how much of the information he was ableto retrieve the next day. This figure can be seen on the attatched sheet, Figure9.3. Ebbinghaus discovered that the longer he repeated the list on the first daythe more he remembered on the second day when he was trying to recall theinformation (Myers, 1998). Here is where the principle The amountremembered depends on the time spent learning stems from (Myers 1998). .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f , .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .postImageUrl , .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f , .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:hover , .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:visited , .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:active { border:0!important; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:active , .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ua4681f09300fb0831b1bc1a4be56f61f:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Toni Morrison EssayEbbinghaus didnt always remember what he learned though. The amount he forgotcan be seen his forgetting curve (see attached sheet) Figure 9.13. Ebbinghaustested himself up to thirty days after the inital remembering and graphed whathe remembered then (Myers, 1998). The results show that as time increasedpercentage remembered decreases (Myers, 1998). Ebbinghaus did distinguish thatnonsense information is more easily forgotten then everyday material. Accordingto Gale (1996) Ebinghaus tested himself on 420 lists of 16 syllables 340 timeseach, making 14,280 trials. Ebbinghaus studied learning rates for meaningful andmeaningless material concluding that meani ngful items such as sentences andwords could be learned much more efficiently than nonsense syllables (Gale,1996). As a result of Ebbinghaus work more about memory is now known. It isbetter to evenly space memorization rather than memorize it all at once (Gale,1996). Despite Wunts disagreement many still use Ebbinghaus work on memory asa model for research on human memory (Gale, 1996). Ebbinghaus also developed atest for memory in 1894 while studying the mental capacities of children hedeveloped a sentence completion test that is still used today to measureintelligence (Gale, 1996). This was the Ebbinghaus 5 first successful test ofmental ability (Gale, 1996). Ebbinghaus was the cofounder of the first Germanpsychology journal, the Journal of Psychology and Physiology of the Sense Organsin 1890 and wrote two text books: The Principles of Psychology(1902) and ASummary of Psychology (1908). Man For All Seasons By Thomas More Essays - British Films
Man For All Seasons By Thomas More In the play, A Man For All Seasons, Sir Thomas More is faced with a number of difficult choices, namely whether to support the King's decision to divorce Catherine of Aragon and marry Anne Boleyn and the consequences of that decision. More makes his decision to oppose the marriage early on, but even though it is something he does not waver from, he still has trouble with it, especially when he see the pain it causes to his wife and family. More's antagonists are somewhat obvious, Cromwell, Rich, and to an extent, Norfolk and even his wife, Alice. Cromwell represents the basic evilness and threatens to have More executed for not acquiescing to the marriage, while Rich and Norfolk are representative of the betrayal of Sir Thomas, by giving in to Cromwell and to an extent the King. Lady Alice is an antagonist in the play because of the violent opposition she has for Sir Thomas' decision. Alice is afraid of what may happen to her after Sir Thomas resigns the Chancellorship and what may befall her and her family. Alice's complaints probably have the most impact with More because he does care very deeply about them and might have even caved in to the King, had he not felt that he was correct in his decision and that there was no alternative. More has a very difficult decision in opposing the King and his family, but regardless of the consequences, he feels that he is morally correct and that to choose any other path would be impossible for he could not oppose the Church and God.

Free Essays on Pericles Funeral Speech
Periclesââ¬â¢s Deathless Funeral Speech Even though it has been thousands of years since the speech of Periclesââ¬â¢s many of the issues he touched on still apply today. One issue I am going to touch on that Pericles used in his speech is the military, and how the tactics of war of todayââ¬â¢s society are closely related to those back in 430 b.c. Another aspect that I will touch on during this paper is the government. The similarities of government that were used back then and what is used in our country today is mind-boggling. The democracy used in Athenian times is very similar to what is used in the United States today. There were still differing social classes in Athens, as there still is in the United States society thousands of years later. The last aspect that I am taking from the speech is how the grieving and aging process are still very similar to what people in the United States do today when a loved one is lost. The military in Athens opened its doors to the world. It was far different than most other countries. Athenians were not afraid to let people in. They were open to anyone who was interested in seeing what went on in Athens. They were not afraid of opening their doors to foreigners and they did not exclude them from any opportunity of learning or observing, even though this could and probably would come back to hurt them someday. What I mean by this is the enemy would benefit from this by seeing what goes on with their military and this might hurt the Athenians in the long run. That is what was so wonderful about this city. Athenians saw the bad but they always looked at the good side of something. During war the enemies did not invade the country alone but they always brought all their confederates. This was contrary to the Athenians who would advance alone into some hostile ground on foreign soil. They would usually move through countries with ease. According to Getty Museum, ââ¬Å"A line is an identifiable created by a point moving into space,â⬠(web). These shapes express breadth, length, and depth. The shapes created by different lines create balance to the space, texture, and the colours used. The balance created is symmetrical since similar lines pass through every direction of the square. The central part has a radial balance and although some lines differ on the sides, a symmetrical balance is still achieved. The artist emphasized the central part by making it lighter than the other parts to depict the source of the lines flowing form it. The artist uses colour to capture

Psychology Reflective Essay
Psychology Reflective Essay The psychology is called the science of behavior which means the study of human nature and activities. It is significant as it is involved with the research of actions and psychological procedures and simultaneously, it is also used in many different places of individual lifestyle. The most common approaches in psychology are behavioral, psychoanalytic, cognitive, social/cultural, and physiological. Everything we do is very much related to psychology. Itââ¬â¢s relevant in my life because it allows me to comprehend myself better. It also allows me to comprehend other individuals. If you comprehend mindset, you can modify your own actions and help other individuals to modify theirs. You can also estimate how other individuals are going to respond to factors. The people that study the behaviors are called psychologists. Psychologys four main goals are to describe what occurred, explain why it occurred, predict what event is likely to occur next, and to change to prevent unwanted outc omes. Psychologists study the process of thinking, learning, cognition, emotions, motivations, and personalities. According to the psychology knowledge that Iââ¬â¢ve been acquiring during my psychology course I notified that as person psychology has helped me to prepare myself for any kind of situation in life: it can help you understand the different behaviors of people and the things around you, which is beneficial to you when you need to make a judgment or take a hard decision ; it can help in your development as a person with individual interaction in places such as school or job settings; It also can help to shape your personality and it can even enhance your individual life: if you know what can cause psychological or psychological problems then you know how to avoid it. In the first place, learning is a change in behavior or in potential behavior that occurs as a result of experience. There are three major types of learning respectively: the classical conditioning which is learning through association, the operant conditioning itââ¬â¢s learning through consequences and the observational learning which is learning through observation. First of all I got the classical conditioning explain by Pavlovââ¬â¢s and Watsonââ¬â¢s experiments, from my personal opinion I must confess that Iââ¬â¢ve been learned a lot about of associations with several situations that happened during my daily routine, for example I often have problems to control my desire to go to the bathroom when I listen the water noise next to me in any place because I think my brain usually make the association of water noise with the sensation of relief and my bodyââ¬â¢s automatic response is make a pee. Then I have the operant conditioning by B.F. Skinner says that the behavi or is result of consequences. Itââ¬â¢s divided into two aspects namely the reinforcement that increases the likelihood of response being repeated. It can be positive when thereââ¬â¢s a strengthening response because something is added and negative when thereââ¬â¢s a strengthening response because something is moved/avoid. On the other hand we got punishment that decreases the likelihood that the behavior will be repeated, also it can be positive when the behavior decreases by adding an aversive stimulus and negative when the behavior decreases by removing something desirable. On my childhood I remember that I used to be reinforced and punished in several different situations by my parents and sometimes by some teachers that I had. However, the most remarkable situations about reinforced and punishment were with my parents especially with my father because he is an extremely conservative person about the customs and behaviors, so we were almost every time in conflict with id eas, I used to be a person who didnââ¬â¢t like to listen their advices and I took my decisions by myself acting like irresponsible person in some cases. As a consequence of my personality I received more punishment than reinforcement but I believed that it helped me to understand better some situations in life and now I become more flexible and understandable person when I got to take any decision or even accept any life condition. The last one is the observational learning by Albert Bandura, it concerns to learning new behavior by watching others. About this type of learning I think itââ¬â¢s the most common in my life because Iââ¬â¢ve learned a lot things in my life by watching the people around me such as using computer, riding on bicycle, and playing guitar. I used to like see my father playing guitar, so I decided to try learn how to play it by myself and It was a great idea because I just watched him and then I went to practice on my bedroom when I realized after one m onth I was playing it. Even though I went through these tree learning process I donââ¬â¢t have any doubt to say that the operant was the one that had more impact on me because of my mentality now. Second, the development describes the growth of humans throughout the lifespan, from conception to death. The scientific study of human development seeks to understand and explain how and why people change throughout life. This includes all aspects of human growth, including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, perceptual, and personality development. Thereââ¬â¢re four theories in development, the first theory is the theory of cognitive development by Piaget it talks about the nature and development of human intelligence. He divided this theory in four stages: the first stage is the sensorimotor during this stage, babies and youngsters acquire knowledge through neurological encounters and adjusting things. I donââ¬â¢t remember about nothing I did on this stage, my mother always tells me that I cried too much, though. The second stage is the preoperational stage at this stage, children understand through imagine play but still battle with reasoning and taking the perspecti ve of other people. On this stage I got some memories not very clear but one of them is pretty funny I remember that I was struggling with my parents because I didnââ¬â¢t want to share the toys with my brother even if I wasnââ¬â¢t playing with them. The third stage is the concrete operational stage children at this point of growth start to think more rationally, but their considering can also be very firm, they usually battle with subjective and theoretical ideas. This stage is very interesting because during it I started to be very curious about the things around me and I used to make a lot questions for my parents related to every single object or person that I saw in front of me. The last stage is the formal operational includes an increase in thinking, the ability to use deductive thinking, and a knowing of subjective concepts. Itââ¬â¢s the easier one to remember because it happened recently, it was marked by my freedom of expression when I needed to take decisions and express my thoughts, and basically Iââ¬â¢ve become more independent. The second theory is the Eriksonââ¬â¢s theory of psychosocial development where he described the development of ego identity that occurs throughout the lifespan. For that he stated eight psychosocial stages marked by basic conflict between two or more elements. On Eriksonââ¬â¢s stages Iââ¬â¢m on stage 6 (Intimacy vs Isolation) this stage is all about relationships, so I personally liked this stage for this aspect and the other aspect is because it means that at least Iââ¬â¢m already young adult. In fact, the relationship aspect on this stage is crucial for me because I consider myself as a shy person, since I moved to the U.S. this characteristic of my personality has become even more challenging for me because itââ¬â¢s a different culture and people, however I decided to work on it and so far Iââ¬â¢ve enjoyed this challenger where I try to building new relationships with people from others cul ture. The third theory is the Ainsworthââ¬â¢s attachment theory itââ¬â¢s focused on the relationships and bonds between individuals, particularly long-term relationships such as those between a mother or father and kid and between loving associates. She identified three main attachment styles, secure, insecure avoidant and insecure ambivalent. Honestly, Iââ¬â¢m not pretty sure about my attachment but I think that Iââ¬â¢m the secure attachment because of my relationship with others people I usually liked to have a physical contact with the people who are close to me especially now that Iââ¬â¢m far from family. This theory also talk about of the three parenting main styles, authoritarian parenting style, authoritative parenting style, and permissive parenting style. My parents fit better with authoritative parenting style even not totally but at least 90 % because they established rules and guidelines for me that were expected to follow. However, they used to be very de mocratic with especially my father we had a lot of conversations to avoid unnecessary situations before they happen. These conversations had a huge impact for me to be who I am today because I can feel that I more happy, capable and mature person. Finally, we got Kohlbergs theory of moral development which is based upon research and interviews with groups of young children. My moral development was shaped in accordance with my parentââ¬â¢s education, it allowed me to create a common sense inside of me that has been advantageous on my relationships now as a young adult. I can say that inside the moral development area I see myself on Level 3 post conventional morality on stage 6 because now I realized that morality is based on principles that transcend mutual benefit and I follow these internalized principles of justice that I believe even if they conflict with law and rules. Afterwards is the personality refers to our enduring, distinctive thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, which characterize how we adapt to our world. Thereââ¬â¢re four major psychology theories; the behavioral and social theories suggest that personality is a consequence of interaction between the individual and the environment consist of B. F. Skinner and John B. Watson; the humanist theories highlight the significance of free will and individual experience in the growth of personality include Carl Rogers and Abraham Maslow; the trait theories, the according to this concept, character is created up of a variety of wide characteristics, and finally the psychodynamic theories that see personality as primarily unconscious, occurring in stages, and being linked to early experiences. The last theories were influenced by Sigmund Freud, he believed that the three components personality were the id which is the only part of personality that is existing from birth, for example as a child my id was cry too much like my mother usually tell me and I just stopped crying when someone took me for a ride. Next is the ego itââ¬â¢s the part of personality that is accountable for dealing with reality, in my case I must confess that Iââ¬â¢m an egocentric person itââ¬â¢s good to achieve my goals in life, however, sometimes I try not to be so egocentric because it can induce some conflicts with others people and I just like to avoid them, so I prefer to be an understandable person with others. Even though Iââ¬â¢m egocentric, I still care about the others people. The last is the superego the aspect of personality that keeps all of our internalized ethical requirements and values that we obtain from both mother and father and societyour feeling of right and wrong. I personally believe that my superego is the reflection of my ego because I had to prepare myself for the life in society mentally and physically, as a result I became more flexible and reasonable to take decisi ons avoiding follow my impulses. Additionally he talked about defense mechanisms which is a tactic developed by the ego to protect against anxiety. There are nine defense mechanisms but during my life I use to go through the number six defense mechanism which is the sublimation because I believe that the better way to relief your body and mind from your emotions that make you feel furious or mad is doing something constructive. In fact, there are some significant changes in my personality from my childhood until these days, I became more mature, and I started to use the critical thinking to analyze my mistakes and failures to improve my personality. Now I can tell right from wrong. In addition, the stress and health. Overall, the stress is a natural feeling that we all already felt and it may cause some health problems. Thereupon, the stress and health donââ¬â¢t match each other. Similarly with others people my stress is caused by various sources either by everyday situations or even personal life. The most frequent and common sources of stress that I have are usually related to my personal life such as frustrations and charges in the relationship with my parents and my girlfriend. I strongly believe there will be a period of my life that Ill learn to deal with them but I donââ¬â¢t know if theyââ¬â¢ll change because I think that they are part of life, so we need to find solutions to cope with them. In order to cope with my stressors I personally like to do several things such as physical actives because I consider myself a healthy person, so I feel comfortable and well when Iââ¬â¢m practicing physical exercises; another thing that I like is to hang out with my friends and sometimes with my family itââ¬â¢s a good way to have fun with the people you adore; I also like to play my guitar. Basically, you need to something that make you feel good not necessarily physical activists it can be some kinds of therapies to relax your mind and body. Due the circumstances of my life Iââ¬â¢m more likely to use a problem focused strategy, so I created a daily stress journal because it helps me to identify how much stress Iââ¬â¢m under, the potential stress triggers and ways to reduce the stress in my life. Im an optimistic person but realistic too. I mean in all situations of my life I always like to be optimistic, however, with my feet on floor, I normally like to use the probability rule because of that I can be both optimistic and realistic. In conclusion, this essay made me realize that psychology is nothing but common sense. Psychology can be used in everyday lifestyle. You can use psychology to get inspired toward whatever objectives you create for yourself. Success stories techniques for yourself, implementing yourself to understand new factors, and fulfilling yourself when you achieve a objective are all uses of psychology. I have discovered a lot about effects of psychology in my lifestyle. Learning psychology has been very significant to me and has given me a better comprehend of my ideas, emotions, and actions. Lastly, I can comprehend who I am and look at activities on a more beneficial part.

To Say This Is Enough :: essays research papers
Novels present different views about life. They often consist of stories about events that may be totally imaginary, or fictionally realistic. Writers usually write novels to present their ideas and comments about human behavior. Three literary works that poignantly shows their authors' perceptions about life and human behavior are 'The Lame Shall Enter First';, Joy Luck Club, and To Kill A Mocking Bird. Flannery O Conner shows what really matters in life in 'The Lame Shall Enter First';. The importance of faith and courage in a patriarchal society is imprinted in Joy Luck Club. Lastly, in To Kill A Mockingbird, Harper Lee presents an agathistic assumption about human behavior. Literature is said to be the mirror of human behavior, as a form of art, it can also be used to show the quirks and flaws of society---such is the case in these pieces. à à à à à The assumption made by the character in 'The Lame Shall Enter First'; is that it is enough for a person to appear morally right, as if faith in God is not necessary. The belief that there is no God is presented by the protagonist, Sheppard. For Sheppard, intelligence and morality are the most important values in life. It is not important for him to believe in God. He does not believe in the after life, nor does he believe that he has to follow the Bible. For him, the Bible is another book written by a fanatical society that preceded his. Sheppard introduces that premise that God should be replaced by science by trying to impress its wonders to Rufus John. He reasons that since there is neither physical nor scientific evidence that god exists. Rufus should stop believing in God and the bible. Because of Sheppard's lack of faith, he gauges his value according to how many people he has helped. à à à à à Flannery O'Conner defies everything that Sheppard stands for by taking everything that Sheppard value at the end of the story. Rufusà à à à à John, the focal point of Sheppard's obsession on helping others, shows Sheppard the error of his ways by going back to prison. By refusing to be taken by Sheppard's persuasion of looking at the world in a scientific viewpoint, Rufus shows that faith is more important than being free---if being free means not believing in God. From the story, Flannery O'Conner takes the side of Rufus. 'The lame shall enter first…'; is the cry that Rufus yelled at Sheppard.

Enduring power of love: The Notebook
The Notebook, written by Nicolas Sparks, can be named one of the best American romantic novels. The book portrays every trait in a guy or girl would desire to have in a significant other. According to Nicolas Sparks, ââ¬Å"it is a celebration of how passion can be ageless and timeless, tales that moves us to laughter and tears and makes us believe in true love all over againâ⬠. The Notebook was on the New York Times best-seller list within the very first week of release. It spent over a year as a hardcover best seller. Theresa Park, Nicolas Sparksââ¬â¢ agent, discovered the book after going through her slush pile, without hesitation, Park offered to represent him. In 1995, one year later, Sparks agent managed to secure a $1 million advance for it from Time Warner Book Group, the novel was then published the following year in October 1996. The Notebook was originally inspired by Sparksââ¬â¢ wifeââ¬â¢s grandparents who had been married for over sixty years. Based on Sparks (2004), They had a truly magical relationship, one that withstood the test of time and circumstance. Ultimately their love for each other gave Sparks the idea to even consider on attempting describing their deep love. The main characters in the book were, Allison Nelson and Noah Calhoun. The two met at a carnival in a peaceful town of New Bern, North Carolina in 1946. Little did Allie and Noah know their bond would be more than just a summer romance of the 1940ââ¬â¢s. While watching the movie, ââ¬Å"The Notebook,â⬠it differed from the book in several ways. From the way the two met, their heartbreaking breakup and the letters that Noah wrote Allison. However both versions were still incredibly amazing. The movie has much strength. The first strength is acting. Every actor and actress played their role well. Cassavetesââ¬â¢ first and only choice to play the role of Noah was Ryan Gosling (The Notebook). He did not want anyone else to play this role. As for Rachel McAdams, she had beaten nine other actresses to play the role of Allison. That is amazing! The older Allison was played by Cassavetes mother. Another strength in this movie was the plot. Without a good plot, there would be no point to the movie. The last and final strength in ââ¬Å"The Notebookâ⬠is emotion. This film takes one through every motion imaginable. As for examples, when Allie and Noah split, the emotional response automatically takes a tole on someone. Itââ¬â¢s as if, your actually apart of the movie. In the book, Allison and Noah met in 1932, at the time Allison was 15 and Noah was 17. But in the movie, they met in the year of 1940, where they both were around the same age of 17. According to Cassavetes, (unsolved), this movie was filmed in South Carolina because of its 1040ââ¬â¢s look. Allison and Noah meet at a carnival, where Allison is very fond of Noah. With love in the air, they spent the rest of the night together until the carnival was over. However, in the movie, Noah became infatuated with Allison, and went to the extreme of insanity by jumping on the ferryââ¬â¢s wheel to ask her out. Noah plays remarkable in both and just makes the audience fall in love with his character. With most summer romances follows heartache. As for Noah and Allison, their fairytale love werenââ¬â¢t excluded. When the summer ended, Allison had to return back home, leaving Noah behind. With heartache comes conflict, according to the movie, Allison and Noah got into a huge fight before she left, which ultimately lead them regretting the whole disagreement. Nicolas Sparks, captured this moment perfectly, not only does it make the audience stand on edge; it also makes the viewerââ¬â¢s wonder could true love really occur this beautiful. According to Sparks (2004), True Love exists and thereââ¬â¢s evidence of it every day. In 1932, Allison and Noah separate for fourteen years, but in the movie they separated in 1940 for only seven years. Many feel as if the huge timeline difference were to create tension for a more dramatic audience, considering younger audience would be drawn into the movie more. In the movie, Noahââ¬â¢s character is so much more romantic than in the book. Noahââ¬â¢s love for Allison was so strong in the movie, that he wrote her a letter every day for a year. That is three hundred and sixty five letters from a heart aching young man, who only wish in the world is to reunite with the love of his life. In the book, Noah wrote Allison one letter a month, the equivalent of only 12 letters. Cassavetes did a wonderful job into capturing such a raw talent and emotions that draws an audience attention. Unfortunately, Allison never receives one letter. So therefore, Noah had to mend his broken heart by moving on. Right before Noah left for the war, Noah sent his last love letter. The time frame was shortened for the movie, which made it a lot easier for younger audience to relate too. Nicolas Sparks, ââ¬Å"The Notebookâ⬠, strongly informs the world on how true love exists, between a man and a woman. Noah and Allison had such true love that some way or another, their love carried them into the afterlife together. In both the book and movie, Noah sneaks Allison room, where they are currently in the nursing home due to their aging and health, and they both laid together all night long (Sparks, 1996, p. 204). When morning comes, the nurse finds them holding hands still and realizes they passed away together in their sleep. Noah stated, ââ¬Å"If youââ¬â¢re a bird, Iââ¬â¢m a birdâ⬠(Sparks, 1996, p. 103), clearly shows how deep their love remained. This remarkable story makes every young lady want to fall in love, and only hope to have a love like ââ¬Å"The Notebook.â⬠Allison and Noahââ¬â¢s love could outstand anything. Sparks has written the ultimately perfect fantast for the world. ââ¬Å"I think the most obvious reason is that the story touched people in a deeply personal way. It seems that nearly everyone I spoke with about the novel knew a ââ¬Å"Noah and Allieâ⬠in their own life.â⬠(Sparks, 2004). The Notebook was amazingly directed, written and it is great to read and watch.

The Ins Outs of Corporate Ghostwriting
The Ins Outs of Corporate Ghostwriting While Iââ¬â¢m known as a journalist, writer and editor, Iââ¬â¢ve also done a lot of corporate ghostwriting behind the scenes. Final year project computing with business Dissertation
Final year project computing with business - Dissertation Example 40 Appendix C 40 Abstract A search through literature from various secondary sources shows that there is not much focus on the salon business when it comes to electronic commerce. Even though there are isolated sources that talk about different and independent components of the subject of e-commerce and the salon businesses, there cannot be found much specific literature that relates e-commerce directly to the salon business. There could be a number of reasons accounting for such gaps in literature. E-commerce has actually been appreciated as a platform that makes the conduct of businesses very rapid and forthcoming. This is because it generally ensures that the small working place of a particular business venture gains a global status by having its presence registered in every corner of the world where internet services can be accessed. The study was conducted to bring out the problem with the numerous cases of congestion at salons and the frequent disappointments that customers enc ountered. The study was conducted with the notion that if the identified problem was adequately dealt with, salon operators and customers could adequately plan their times to ensure that customers are placed at the best times they could receive service. Once this is done on the wings of e-commerce, there can be the assurance that there will be improved satisfaction of work. This can also increase profitability for salon owners. Chapter 1 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background to the Study The impact of technology on human life is certainly overwhelming, specifically when mention is made of computers and for that matter the internet. Today, the internet has become a one stop centre where almost everything a person needs in a day to make his life complete can be found (Winner, 2008). But even as the popularity and usefulness of the internet advances, businesses and business operators in various industry sectors have taken advantage of the situation to advance their trade and make their revenues grow. One of the most crucial and important ways in which businesses make use of the internet is through electronic commerce, commonly referred to as e-commerce. Through e-commerce, a lot of activities take place on the internet, including advertisement of products and services, window shopping, search for products and services, sale and purchase of products and services, the booking of appointment services, and the payment of products and services (Virilio, 2008). It would however be noted that most e-commerce that take place among various companies and business ventures; no matter how large or small they are, take place via the use of specific websites. Such websites

Management Theory and Conflict in Internet Organisations Essay
Management Theory and Conflict in Internet Organisations - Essay Example According to the research findings, it can, therefore, be said that the protocols and standards are gathered in the form of various studies and drafts and the Internet organisation evaluates whether the specifications will be put forward by means of a process that will elevate the existing specifications to a new level to set the ââ¬ËInternet Standardsââ¬â¢. For instance, the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) develops working groups to develop the list of specifications which are further evaluated by Internet Engineering Steering Group (IESG) and IAB; the Internet Society will then publish the latest standards for Internet companies. All web standards are then promulgated by World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) along with other groups. In the last few years, the field of management and organizational behavior has diversified into a wide range of subjects as the organization structure has changed drastically. The changes in the organization and other aspects of the business has been due to the world moving towards a digital era and bringing immense changes in the management of an organization and the way businesses are conducted. As the study of management and organization has broadened, the central point or area of study is the development that has taken place in the thought process of management and it is known as management theory. As numerous researchers have differing views on organizations, management teams, and their structures, they have classified their work into different kinds of approaches. These approaches are based on the assumptions and situations that the researchers have undergone while designing their management approaches.

Virginia State Local Government Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Virginia State Local Government - Essay Example The division, however, does not end with the cultural aspect. Statistics also show that those living in the northernmost part of the state earn more and have a higher level of education than those at southern and southwestern counties. The Commonwealth Institute, a liberal thinking organization focused on Virginia, reached more or less the same conclusions, focusing more, however, on the income inequalities in the state. Without saying explicitly that the people up north are better off than their southern and southwestern counterparts, the institute found that there is a higher wage gap between whites and African-Americans in the state and this has not changed significantly since the late 1970's. This claim is supported by findings of experts that wages and salaries in the north are indeed higher than the rest of Virginia, where incidentally more African-Americans can be found. Given the existence of inequity between northern and southern counties, an obvious solution to the problem would actually be for the government to strive to make state of things equal, given the injustices and unfairness present in Virginia nowadays. However, the question is: how do legislators go about doing this For one, legislators can push for the use of other gu

Acc 291 Reflective Summary Week 3 Essay Example for Free
Acc 291 Reflective Summary Week 3 Essay Calculating stock, dividends, and stock splits Stock is buying into ownership of a company. It is buying into their assets as well as their earnings. To calculate stock one must understand how to calculate the earnings per share. To calculate the earnings per share take the net earnings and divide by the outstanding shares. Dividends are cash distributions that companies pay out regularly to shareholders from earnings. Profitable companies pay dividends. To calculate dividends for dollar amount take the number of owned shares and multiply by the dividend per share. Stock split is increasing the number of outstanding shares that is owned by dividing each share. Each stockholder receives an additional share, but the value of each is reduced by half. Two shares equal the original value before the share split took place. The calculation of stock splitting is very complicated. See more:à Mark Twains Humorous Satire in Running for Governor Essay Differentiate types of stocks issued by corporations. There are two basic types of stocks that corporations can issue. Common stock and preferred stock are the two types; both have different benefits and possible opportunities. Common stock is the most basic type of stock you can obtain from a corporation. Since itââ¬â¢s the basic type of stock that you can purchase it has its limitations and is very limited in value. Owning a common share of the corporation shows that you own a fraction of company and its value is directly impacted by the companyââ¬â¢s monetary successes and failures. Most see owning common shares as a risky investmentà and this is why the owners will receive their profits after the preferred stock is disbursed. Preferred stock is the other type of stock that corporations issue. The main benefit of owning a preferred share of a corporation is that your dividends are received before common shareholders. Unlike common shareholder benefits, preferred stock is based on a fixed dividend payment. If the company goes out of business or liquidates their assets, preferred shareholders still receive the money back they invested and this is disbursed before common stockholders receive theirs as well. The only setback is that preferred stock cannot doesnââ¬â¢t gain as much in value as the common shareholder profit because of the fixed payment. Preferred stock also has a division of classes that is based on market prices, restrictions, etc. All in all, depending on the investorââ¬â¢s needs and financial opportunities both stock options have their benefits and possible setbacks. There he stands atop the stairs of the Lincoln Memorial, in the nationsââ¬â¢ capital, at a podium, speaking to the world. The crowds faces full of hope. Ears opened wide and clear, for the Dr. is speaking today. He is speaking from the heart and telling the nation that he has a ââ¬Å"DREAM.â⬠Dr. King had a dream and as most people think that it is geared towards blacks and whites, itââ¬â¢s not. Dr. King wanted equality between everybody. He wanted freedom from racism and prejudice throughout the nation. He was very good in getting the emotional perspective of persuasion across to his audience. King was a very inspirational man; his words were so true and full of meaning. He spoke to everyone and got everybody involved. This is why people followed him and why I think this is the most persuasive piece we have read. He not only implies his wants but he carries along with him the wants and needs of every man or woman ever treated poorly because of the color of their skin or their beliefs. There is a certain unexplainable meaning and feeling when a man like King steps up in front of the world and says, ââ¬Å"I have a Dream.â⬠à à à à à I chose Kingââ¬â¢s speech because it has so much more meaning and history behind it than the others. He pulled me into his world and showed me the way God intended it to be. His constant uses of virtually every form of persuasive writings are some of the best that can be used to pull an audience in. It has a greater meaning to it than say, Ginsberg and/or Shakespeare, these are more or less poetic displays of writing and in Shakespeareââ¬â¢s case this is a fictional story. King has grown up in a society that has been raised to hate anything that isnââ¬â¢t the same color as them. King exclaimed it wonderfully when he said, ââ¬Å"I have a dream one that one day my children will not be judged be the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.â⬠These are such powerful words that really make a person think. They make you think about how youââ¬â¢re conducting your life right now. Are you treating everybody with the same courtesy and re spect, or are you singling out certain races because for some reason or another you have a negative view towards them?

Science and My Daily Life
Science and My Daily life Brenda Durbin Kaplan University Science and I Science has and always will play a constant important role in my daily life, maybe more so than others. Science for me has not always been my strong subject in school and I very easily tend to get intimidated. But when I look at my daily life and realize how much science plays a role in it, I cannot help but smile. Science is not at all bad, it has allowed me to do many things every day, even if I do not take the time to stop and think about it, it is there. From the way the microwave heats up the water for my coffee every morning or the way my body digests the food I eat every meal and makes it into energy or even a trip to the doctorââ¬â¢s office with my son, science is a constant companion and without it, my life would have turned out very different indeed. If I arrived home late one night and after unlocking the front door, I tried to turn on a light and it did not respond I would begin a process of elimina tion, or in other words, using the scientific method to find out the problem.First I would check the light bulb, to see if it had blown, once replacing the bulb if I still did not have light I would then go to my back porch and to the fuse box. I would then check the fuses to see if maybe a breaker was tripped or I had a blown fuse. If even after doing this I still have no power I would then call my electric company, asking them if someone had hit a power pole, or if they were conducting some kind of random test(s) or even making repair(s) to the line. Once finding out some information from the company I would then know whether to light some candles and to be patient or if I would have to call an electrician. For scenario number two I will use the situation of my car not starting. First I would check the level of gas in my vehicle, if that was found to be not the problem I would then check the battery and the terminals making sure they are all clean and connected. I would then check the spark plugs to see if they were misfiring, dirty or corroded. If after checking these items I still would be finding no solution, I would do my best to get a jump start from a passing motorist. If the jumps start did not elp to start my car I would then have to call a tow truck to bring my car to a garage where a mechanic would be able to research the problem better with his/her equipment and tools. While waiting for the answer and the problem to be fixed from the mechanic I would have to plan to either take a cab or find a ride with my friend(s) and/or co-workers to work, appointments and any place I need to go for my routine errands. Every day I get up at 5:30am. Without science (to tell the time of day) and the technology that goes into my alarm clock chances are 5:30am would not be the time I would be getting up.I then go upstairs and wake up my sons Warren and Ryely to get ready for school. When Warren comes down stairs I help him get his morning treatment machines ready. W arren was born with Cystic Fibrosis and relies on science and the continuing scientific advances of treatments, medicines and therapies to continue living. Warrenââ¬â¢s first treatment is called a nebulizer, this lasts about 15 minutes. The nebulizer loosens the thick mucus on the walls of Warrenââ¬â¢s lungs. Then his next treatment is done with what is called ââ¬Å"the vest airway clearance systemâ⬠(Hill-Rom Services, 2011).This vest gently compresses and releases the chest wall up to 25 times per second (Hill-Rom Services, 2011). In other words it basically pounds the loosened mucus (from his first treatment, ââ¬Å"the nebâ⬠as we call it) off and out of Warrenââ¬â¢s lungs so that he may cough it up. This vest treatment last for thirty minutes. After his treatments are finished, I then help Warren break down the machines, clean them and put them away until they are needed again in the evening. Warren does both of these treatments twice a day. Without science I would not have had Warren in my life for so long.He is nineteen and each day he does these treatments is another day I get to have my son in my life. Next, I prepare breakfast for both Warren and Ryely. We have a gas stove in our kitchen so the use of science plays a big role in the cooking of the food for all our meals. After dinner I then lay out all of Warrenââ¬â¢s many medications they he needs to take. The absolute most important of all the medication is what is called Creon. Creon ââ¬Å"contains pancrelipase ââ¬â a combination of three enzymes: lipase, protease, and amylaseâ⬠(Drugs. com, 2011).These enzymes are produced in the pancreas of people without CF. In people who do have CF however, the thick sticky mucus plugs the ducts in the pancreas so that the enzymes cannot reach the food to help break down and digest what food is eaten. So every time Warren eats he needs to take these, five capsules for snacks and seven with meals. Without science, everything War ren eats would pass right through his system and no nutrition would be absorbed by his body. After breakfast it is usually time for the boys to leave so that they can go to their bus stops. When they leave I will usually either start getting ready for any appointments that are scheduled or start cleaning the house. I must also admit there are some days that I do in fact go back to bed to catch an hour or two of more sleep. Science plays a huge role in the cleaning of my house also. From the hot water I use to mop the floors to the cleaners I use to disinfect and make my home smell clean science is there. Science has improved the quality of my life so very much. In explaining how I will get very emotional and I hope you understand.Without science Warren would not have lived, therefore I would not have become a mother. Without the scientific understanding of genetics and genetic diseases not only would I have lost Warren but I could have very well ended up in jail for child abuse. Befo re a doctor thought of giving Warren a sweat test (a test which measures the amount of salt in sweat) I was being investigated by the state of Maine for suspicion of child abuse. Warren was only 3 months old at the time and got down to 2 pounds 1. 3 ounces. The doctors and nurses immediately thought where I was a young mother I must have not been feeding him. This hung over my head the whole time Warren was being tested and in the neonatal critical care unit. Only when a CF specialist visiting Mid Maine Medical Center from the Childrenââ¬â¢s Hospital of Boston, after examining my son decided that a sweat test was needed, and done did this allegation clear up. Removing all doubt from the doctors and nurses of my mothering skills and love toward my son. The sweat test came back positive that Warren had CF. It was right then my life changed. Not only did my life change due to the treatments, medications and care Warren needed daily but also I was taught a most valuable lesson, never t ake anyone (who is in your life), no matter how small they are for granted. Every smile, laugh and memory with and from both my children have become even more precious to me now knowing that without the help of science Warren would not be a part of the family. Warren fought so hard to live (and continues to fight) so that I could be a mother, his mother. That in itself changes a person. To be perfectly honest, there has been only one negative impact that science has had on my life.I have always wanted to have at least two children. I underwent genetic testing soon after Warren was diagnosed with CF and the results that came in were scary. Warrenââ¬â¢s father was found to have passed a gene unto him that is very common in about 80% of CF cases, while I had passed on to him a much rarer gene that was only evident in 2% of CF cases. The guilt was unbelievable and very painful to work through. And if that was not enough we were also told that with every child I would have with Warren ââ¬â¢s father the chances it would be born with CF were 1 in 4.I do not believe that I could live without science and I sincerely do not think anyone else could either. As people, we get sick, have headaches, toothaches and need surgeries for a multitude of reasons and without science we simply could not and would not be here. From a small aspirin someone takes for pain, to the food we eat or the healthcare we need and receive science is all around us every day! Science has made it possible for people such as me to live longer, be cared for, and to eat a variety of foods no matter if it is in a box or can and to live.To be honest I have always been too busy with my daily life that I have never stopped to think about how much science was in my life and the ways it presents itself. But through this course I have found a definite respect for science. I will look at things differently now and probably always will since taking this course. Science has been around me long before Warren was born but it was when he came into my life that I began to appreciate science and all the possibilities it holds for the future. One of the biggest possibilities that my family and I are hoping for is one day when CF will stand for cure found. Through the length of this course I have shared many of my own opinions and life experiences. Reflecting on them all I cannot help but smile, I should never be intimidated by science, because it is through science I have the life I live now. References Drugs. com, (2011). Leading Change Strategically Essay
Abstract Whereas change does not cause renovation, all improvements require modification. The ability to develop, test, and implement changes are important for any specific, group, or organization that wants to continually enhance. There are many kinds of changes that will result in renovation, but these particular changes develop from a limited number of change principles. A change idea is a basic notion or approach to alter that, which has been found to be useful in developing specific ideas for changes that result in renovation. John Kotter notes an eight-step process to change. This narrative provides an in-depth review of Charlotte Beers and how she gained trust of those at Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide while CEO, and leveraged that trust to turn internal and external organizational challenges. Employing Kotterââ¬â¢s eight-steps when fostering change, this narrative closely reviews the concepts and how Beers applied the steps to develop change within the sixth largest advertising agency in the world. Charlotte Beers At Ogilvy and Mather Worldwide Sense of Urgency Beers was appointed CEO of Ogilvy and Mather (Ogilvy and Mather) Worldwide in April 1992 to turn around the embattled advertising agency (Levin, 1992, p. 2). Ogilvy and Mather was losing market share and the internal leadership was doing more in fighting than moving the organization in becoming the number one advertising agency. Hiring Beers was key in getting the organization on the right track, leveraging several of Kotterââ¬â¢s change steps in doing so. Coined as someone who is exterior to the organization, Beers was an anomaly as she chosen as a leader who was appointed from outside, that, which was not typical. Most senior leaders within Ogilvy and Mather were promoted from within. After losing major campaigns from Unilever and Shell Oil Company, certain change was imminent, but unaware in how to embrace (Levins, 1992, p. 7).à Additional campaign losses affected the New York office and directed this failure to the most senior person within the organization. A major shake-up took place in 1999, when CEO, Phillips stepped down as the senior leader, and for the first time in history and person outside the company was appointed. With a strong history preceding her, Beersââ¬â¢ prior successes while COO of Tatham-Lair & Kuder, provided expertise needed for Ogilvy and Mather. To be successful, Beers would have to inject a sense of urgency (Kotter, 2002) by outlying the vision of the organization. Beer knew that change would be easier if people at Ogilvy and Mather desired the change and motivated in making it happen. Beers needed to leverage effective communication and build a guiding coalition who could help move that vision to the forefront. Beers was responsible for infusing her vision, while still conducting her managerial and strategic tasks for moving the organization forward. Beers would have to build a new organization structure, which managing politics and keeping eyes on Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s mission and vision. Strategic in her approach, Beers needed to bring into line the organization with Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s vision. Kotter emphasis, possessing a sense of urgency is the first step when implementing change (Kotter, 1992). Getting her message to all internal Ogilvy and Mather stakeholders, Beers wanted one single, clear message that introduced expectations while soliciting help and in gaining buy-in from staff and other organizational leaders. Her first effort was using multimedia to creating a clear message that she needed there help, while still shaping Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s future. Beerââ¬â¢s candor and openness was heart-felt by the masses. Beers needed to form a credible guiding coalition and delegate the authority to them to work across the organization (Kotter, 1992). Once Beers applied these first steps successfully, she could direct her focus on the third step of the model in developing a change vision and strategy. Organizations sometimes rush through this step too quickly. When done correctly, however, it requires time to get a change vision and strategy right (Kotter, 2002). Guiding Coalition Beers established herself as a leader, and made time to meet with each senior executive to hear concerns and how they thought about the impendingà changes. She selected her ââ¬Å"guiding coalitionâ⬠based on those ready for the challenge (Ibarra, 2011). She selected her essential senior leadership team by meeting with them one-on-one to assess their allegiance to Ogilvy and Mather, and ultimately to her. Ensuring that her team reflected the entire organization, composed of artistic and management-focused talent. Convincing Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s key people was crucial in creating Beerââ¬â¢s coalition, built upon the urgency and momentum (Phillips, 2012, p. 496). Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s old ways of doing things was indicative of habitual behaviors. These habits were regular stable patterns of evens that became routine and would take time to change for the failing advert giant. Beer knew organizational change involved both anticipated and unanticipated changes in Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s power and influence structure. While some of the leaders may find their influence or power increased, and others found theirs decreased as a result of Beerââ¬â¢s changes. Bee dealt with misunderstandings as a result of communication barriers, permeated lack of accountability during the prior leadershipââ¬â¢s tenure. Getting the Vision Right Beers took the proper steps to hearing her stakeholders concerns while providing a listening ear. These discussion forums provided Beers with information that would help in getting the vision right. Beers did not follow the standard old way of doing things, but chartered new lines of communication. She provided the financial community with analysis that was very different from her predecessors. Beers indicated to investors where Ogilvy and Mather could become the advertising agency of choice; as they once were. She reinforced her mantra by painting a clear picture to investors of Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s stellar work. Painting a clear vision to the masses was important to Beers, even though she was still working it out. She appealed to the emotional side of employees and leaders, which established linkage and accountability. Beers needed to get the team to establish a simple vision and strategy. She focused on the emotional and creative aspects necessary to drive service and efficiency (Kotter International, 2013). This step meant removing Ogilvy andà Matherââ¬â¢s old things as they were. For Beers to get the vision right, she needed to deem what were Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s values, and why they were essential to the change when executing the vision. Communicate for Buy-in Stakeholder meetings across the United States were difficult for Beers, especially the one in Vienna. There were personality clashes, and each meeting seemed to nearly end the vision before gaining traction. Beerââ¬â¢s tenacity and relentlessness forged the vision Ogilvy and Mather needed to repair the damaged caused by a stalemate of change. Establishing Beerââ¬â¢s vision was difficult as each meeting concluded. Ogilvy desired to be the advertisement agency of choice by all of the Fortuned 500 firms. Beers addressed her leaders by getting to know them and painting a picture that would appeal to their concerns. Daniel Goleman notes six varying leadership styles, when applied to organization structures include: visionary, coaching leader, affiliate, democratic, pace-setting ad commanding (Primal Leadership, 2004). Beers adopted only three of these styles; democratic, authoritative, and coercive. With the most direct approach, Beers often used coercive leadership, which amounts to whatever the boss asks; they receive. While her authoritative approach affords autonomy when propelling individuals toward collective goals. Beers knew she had to tread lightly with this style, as Ogilvy and Mather had not yet stabilized from chaos. Beers knew she had to get united with the nay-says that was giving the changes, the most push back. While in a meeting in Westchester, New York, Beers leverage the audience to gain consensus on Ogilvy and Matherââ¬â¢s mission and vision. Although she was hesitant in having this meeting, she agreed to have another meeting with a larger audience. Utilizing varying leadership styles, provided Beers with trust during a different time of change for Ogilvy and Mather. Her ability to navigate during such a challenging time provided Beers with the credibility needed to galvanize the organization. References Advertising Age. (n.d.).
